This policy forms part of our Terms of Sale and is incorporated into them. Where this page and the Terms of Sale differ on returns, exchanges, or shipping, this page governs.
This policy covers every item we sell — the ties and the pocket squares. Where it says “tie” below, it means either.
A tie is a considered purchase, and you are buying it from a picture on a screen. So the rules below are written to be read once and understood, with no clause that only makes sense after something goes wrong. If any part of this page is unclear, write to us and we will answer in plain words.
The short version
- 30 days from the day your order is delivered to start a return or an exchange.
- The tie must be unworn and back in the box it arrived in. Keep the card; we only need the box — and if the box did not survive the trip, tell us, we will not refuse a return over it.
- We pay return postage — for an exchange, for a refund, for a fault. Every time, inside the 30 days.
- Exchange first is our offer, not a condition. If you want your money back, you get your money back.
- Where the shipping service we use provides tracking, the tracking number reaches you in the dispatch email. What the shipping service will be is not settled yet, so this policy does not promise tracking on every parcel; what is used for your order is shown to you at checkout, before you pay.
- United States only — the fifty states and the District of Columbia.
Exchange-first, in practice
We would rather you end up with the right tie than with a refund, so an exchange is the first thing we offer and the easier of the two paths. Here is exactly what that means, and exactly what it does not.
What it means. When you write to us, we reply with two options in the same message: swap it for another colorway (or a fresh one of the same), or send it back for a refund. If you choose the exchange, we send the replacement as soon as your return gets its first carrier scan — we do not wait for it to reach us and be inspected first. That usually puts the new tie in the post the same day you drop the old one off, so you are not waiting through two transits. (That applies to a first exchange. If we see the same address doing this repeatedly, we will say so and wait for the tie to reach us before sending the replacement.)
Your replacement gets its own 30 days, running from the day it is delivered to you.
What it does not mean. It is not a condition, a first step you have to exhaust, or a store credit. You do not have to try an exchange before asking for a refund. You do not have to explain why. If you reply to our message with “refund, please,” that is the end of the conversation and we process it. Declining the exchange changes nothing about whether you get a refund, how much you get, or how fast it arrives.
Items of the same kind carry the same price across colorways, so a straight swap for another colorway of the same item costs you nothing either way. Where prices differ — a tie for a pocket square, or the other way round — we settle the difference in both directions, at the prices shown when you ordered.
If the colorway you want is out of stock, we tell you the expected date and you choose: wait for it, take a different colorway, or take the refund.
How to start a return or an exchange
- Email hello@lyddandyaffa.com with your order number and one line about what you want — exchange (say which colorway) or refund. No form, no RMA number to chase.
- We reply within one business day, and never later than two, with a prepaid return label and the address to send it to.
- Print the label, put the tie back in its box, and hand the parcel to the carrier named on it.
- For an exchange, your replacement ships on the first carrier scan. For a refund, see the timing below.
We do not need photos or a reason for a change-of-mind return. For a fault or shipping damage, a photo or two helps us fix the underlying problem with the maker or the packaging, but it is not a condition of the return.
What “unworn” means
Not tied, not worn. In practice we check for knot creases at the neck, marks, pulls, and scent — smoke, cologne, perfume. Trying it against a shirt in front of a mirror is not wearing it, and we are not looking for reasons to say no.
The box is the same kind of test. We ask for the tie back in the box it arrived in because that is what protects it in the post. If the box was crushed on the way to you, or you no longer have it, tell us when you write — we will not refuse a return over the box.
If a tie does come back worn or damaged, we will email you before we do anything. You choose: we post it back to you at our cost, or we agree a partial refund together. Where it is a partial refund, the reduction reflects what the tie is worth to us as a sample or a second rather than as new stock, and we tell you the number before we do anything with it. We will never quietly reduce a refund and let you find out from your bank statement.
Who pays for shipping, in each case
| Situation | Return postage | Replacement postage | Original shipping charge, if you paid one |
|---|---|---|---|
| Faulty, damaged in transit, or we sent the wrong thing | We pay | We pay | Refunded in full |
| Exchange — you changed your mind about the colorway | We pay | We pay | Not refunded (nothing is being canceled) |
| Refund — you changed your mind | We pay | — | Not refunded |
| The tie comes back worn or damaged | We already paid | — | — |
| The return starts after the 30 days | Case by case — see below | — | — |
Return labels are ours to buy in every live case above. We would rather absorb the postage than have the cost of a label decide whether you tell us something was wrong. A tie that comes back worn is handled by conversation, as described under What “unworn” means — not by a deduction you find out about later.
Past 30 days: write to us anyway. We are a young company and we read every message. We would rather hear about a problem late than not at all — we just cannot promise the answer in advance.
Refunds — method and timing
- Refunds go back to the original payment method through Stripe, our payment processor. We do not offer store credit, a voucher, or a substitute product in place of a refund.
- If your original card has been closed, or the payment is too old for our processor to reverse, we will agree another route with you and get you your money. We will not use that as a reason to keep it.
- We check the tie when it reaches us and issue the refund within two business days of it arriving — not two days from whenever we get round to opening the parcel. You get an email the moment it is issued.
- After that it is your bank's clock, not ours: card refunds typically post in 5 to 10 business days.
- Sales tax is refunded in full with the item.
- If you cancel an order before it ships, the refund is complete — item, tax, and any shipping charge — and we do not need the 30-day process for it. Just email us. We refund a pre-ship cancellation within seven working days of your email, usually the same day.
Damaged or defective items
If a tie arrives damaged, or a fault shows up in the making of it, tell us within 30 days of delivery. We send a prepaid label and either replace the tie or refund it — your choice, not ours — and we pay every leg of the shipping, including the original shipping charge if you paid one.
Our 30-day defect process ends at 30 days. Write to us regardless: we want to know about a fault in the making of a tie whenever it shows up, and we will tell you honestly what we can do about it. Ordinary wear is not a fault, and we will say so honestly rather than pretend either way. Nothing here limits any implied warranty you have under Florida law; our full warranty terms, and the rights they leave you, are in section 13 of the Terms of Sale.
Lost or stolen parcels
Where the shipping service we use provides tracking, the tracking number is in your dispatch email. The remedies below do not depend on tracking: if a parcel does not arrive, the outcome is the same whether or not there is a number to follow.
- A parcel that has stopped moving, or never showed up. If tracking has not moved for seven business days — or, where there is no tracking, if seven business days have passed beyond the delivery window we gave you at checkout — treat it as lost and email us. We send a replacement (or a refund, your choice) and we file the claim with the carrier ourselves. Chasing the carrier is our job, not yours.
- Tracking says delivered and it is not there. Check with anyone else at the address and with neighbors, and look for it left out of sight — that finds most of them within a day. If it does not turn up, email us. For a first occurrence we will replace or refund the order once we have looked into it with the carrier. We are telling you plainly that a repeated pattern at the same address is the one case where we may ask for a signature service or decline; we would rather say that here than surprise you with it later.
- Wrong or incomplete address. If a parcel comes back to us as undeliverable, we email you, correct the address, and reship. The first reship is free.
Shipping — how and when
- The carrier, the service and the time in transit are shown to you before you pay, on the same screen as the price, and they are repeated in the order confirmation. This page does not name a carrier or a transit time, because how a Lydd & Yaffa tie is made and sent to you is not settled yet, and we will not print a promise we cannot yet keep.
- The shipping time we state at checkout is the one that binds us. If we state none, the law gives us 30 days from your payment to ship, and we hold ourselves to that. We do not treat a missing estimate as an open window.
- If we cannot ship inside that time, we email you before it runs out — you do not have to ask. The email gives you the new date and tells you exactly how to cancel for a full refund. If the new date is more than 30 days after the original one, or if we cannot give you a date at all, we do not wait for you to reply: we cancel and refund unless you tell us within 30 days that you want to wait. Section 8.3 of the Terms of Sale sets this out in full.
- You get a dispatch email when the parcel is handed to the shipping service, with the tracking number where that service provides one.
- Any shipping charge is shown at checkout before you pay. There are no other fees, handling charges, or surcharges added afterwards.
- Florida sales tax applies to orders delivered to a Florida address: 6% state tax, plus the discretionary surtax of the county where the order is delivered (1.5% in Duval County). It is calculated and shown at checkout before you pay. Orders delivered outside Florida are not charged Florida sales tax.
- We ship to street addresses and PO boxes in the fifty states and the District of Columbia.
International shipping
We do not ship outside the United States. We would rather say no than take your money and discover a customs problem with your parcel in it. When that changes we will say so on this page and on the collection page, with the countries and the costs written out.
Pre-orders
Some colorways may be offered as a pre-order before stock is in hand. When that happens:
- You pay the full price at the time of order, at the price shown. It is not a deposit, and there is no second payment later.
- The expected ship window is stated on the payment page before you pay. If you cannot see a ship date, it is not a pre-order.
- If that date moves, we email you with the new one — before the original date passes, not after. You can cancel for a full refund at that point, or at any point before your order ships, for any reason or none.
- If the new date is more than 30 days later than the one you were shown, or if we cannot give you a date, we do not wait for you to reply — we cancel and refund unless you tell us within 30 days that you want to wait. Silence is never treated as agreement to a delay of that length. Section 8.3 of the Terms of Sale sets out the whole procedure.
- Every refund on a canceled pre-order goes back to your original payment method within seven working days, in full — price, sales tax, and any shipping charge.
- Sales tax on a Florida pre-order is charged at the time of purchase, not at shipment.
- Your 30 days start when the tie is delivered, not when you paid. A long pre-order does not eat your return window.
Changes to this policy
We may revise this policy. Every version carries a number and a date, and the version in force when you ordered governs your order for its whole life — through shipment, delay, cancellation, return, and warranty — exactly as section 16 of our Terms of Sale provides. If you want a copy of the version that governed your order, email us and we will send it.
